According to what has now become an almost legendary story – “Scouting” in Earlswood started under the “last lamp-post” in Common Road” sometime in late 1908 – shortly after the successful publication of Baden-Powell’s famous “Scouting for Boys”.
So who were those early Scouts? Well all our records can tell us are their names: Stanley Weller, CJ Hartnup  (who went on to be a Scout Leader), Billy Gibbs & a boy named “Gadd”, who in our records has no first name.

In those early days – Scouting was a weekly meeting in various Hall’s, but perhaps they more regularly met on Redhill Common  - a feature that continues to this day.

Soon after, Earlswood Scouts  were formally recognised as the “Earlswood, 2nd Reigate Scout Troop” and thus Scouting has been a feature of the Earlswood scene for young people for over 100 years, an unbroken record that continues to this day , not bad when you consider that includes two world wars, numerous economic crises and the changing habits & fashions of young people over the last 100 years  – and all on the basis of “volunteers” , despite rumours to the contrary no Scout Leader has ever been paid for his efforts!

The current Scout Hut in Earlswood Road next to the church hall was formally opened after a truly fantastic fund raising effort in 1938 (though only half its current size) and finished in 1958 in time for our 50th.

The link with St John’s Church has always been strong – indeed some of the earliest Committee Meetings were held in St John’s Vicarage. The first formal recognition of the link with St John’s was the formation in 1928 of the 32nd Reigate St John’s Rover Crew (Rovers for those of you of a certain age – were older Scouts roughly 17 to 25). In 1936 the 32nd Reigate Rovers were formally reincorporated into the Earlswood, 2nd Reigate Scout Group – and hence “St John’s” was added to the Group’s name. Whilst the link with the church has had its up & down’s over the years – this link was finally formalised in an “open sponsorship” arrangement in 2002; with a dedication service in St John’s Church.

Any person between 6 & 18 can join our Group as a young Member; we welcome girls as well as boys, all religions and those with special needs. The four Sections (Beavers 6-8, Cubs 8-10, Scouts 10-14, & Explorers 14-18) meet on a weekly basis and at weekends for extra activities. The lessons learned and badges earned in Beavers will assist throughout a Scouting career, right through Explorers and in becoming a Leader. The Group is also able to provide opportunities for adults to get involved with their communities, by becoming a Helper, Assistant, Leader or part of the Executive of the Group.

If you have any further information on the history of the group we would love to hear from you. Please contact Adrian Jackson our unofficial group historian by clicking here
